Although it may be tempting to use less expensive glues that aren’t made specifically for foam, this is the wrong decision for your upholstery projects. The wrong type of glue won’t efficiently hold the foam together, or it will make a bond that is too stiff for upholstery.Choose the right foam glue that will properly bond your foam, effortlessly joining two pieces into one and forming a foam tearing strength bond.
How to Glue Foam Together
Once you’ve purchased your foam glue, you need to make sure you know how to use it correctly. Foam glue can be messy and if used improperly can get all over your project in areas you don’t want it.1. The first step is to prepare your work station. To avoid later clean up, lay down some newspapers or a drop cloth where you will be working. Foam can be tricky to clean up off of your work table, so better to skip that altogether.
2. Next, prepare to apply the glue. You’ll want to apply glue to both pieces of foam that you’ll be sticking together. Stack the foam on top of each other, with the faces you intend to glue facing outward.
3. Spray or apply the glue onto the foam. Be generous. Then wait a few seconds for the glue to achieve a sticky consistency.
4. Bond the foam. Carefully line up your two pieces of foam, then starting from one end, slowly press them together moving along the edge. Press the foam together firmly, without squishing it, to ensure that the glue will hold. Once attached, wait five minutes to give the glue a chance to set.
5. If the foam is too large to press together, pinch them together along the top, then press firmly from the sides. This will help the glue to set along the entire connection.
