Add Casters to your Furniture
Furniture casters are a great way to make heavy, burdensome furniture easy to move. Furniture with casters included is easier to clean and maintain. Adding furniture casters to your projects will make them more appealing and easier to install in your home or office.
Even better, furniture casters are very easy to install! Most people don’t think to add furniture casters to their projects. Or otherwise, they believe that casters are tricky to install and not worth buying. But in fact, the opposite is true. With just a few easy to follow steps, you can be installing furniture casters on any project you like.
Stem or Plate Casters:
There are two types of furniture casters available for your upholstery projects: stem casters and screw-on casters. Each type has a different application and their own unique uses.
Stem caster wheels are normally positioned on the underside of the leg or corner of furniture. These casters are usually a metallic ball covered by another piece of metal. Stem casters are generally considered to be the more decorative type of caster.
Stem casters come in two parts, the ball or rolling element and the sleeve. You need to have both parts in order to properly install your furniture casters. First you must insert the sleeve into a drilled hole in the bottom of your furniture, then you can press the rolling element into the sleeve. These decorative casters allow furniture to be moved or positioned in any direction.
The second type of furniture casters, screw-on casters, are screwed onto the bottoms of furniture with a flat plate. This type of caster is no less decorative than stem casters. In general, screw-on casters come with a plastic wheel situated in a metal casing. There are types that swivel, some that are fixed, and others than can lock in place. Clearly, the swiveling casters are the most versatile.
Whichever caster you choose to apply to your furniture, you want to be sure to apply it to a strong section of furniture that will hold up against the pressure. You also want to make sure the furniture is level before applying the casters.
Furniture casters can make furniture more versatile, easier to move, and more convenient to clean. Choose the most attractive caster for your project and see what a positive change they can bring.
