Upholstery webbing is the material found in most sitting furniture, such as chairs or sofas, that is used to create a firm seat for the cushion. Without webbing, your furniture projects won’t have that same firmness and your furniture would be unusable.

Good webbing should have the right combination of strength and flexibility for your project. You want the webbing to be firm enough for comfortable seating yet flexible enough not to break under pressure.

Types of webbing

Jute webbing has long been the most popular type of webbing found in most upholstery projects. Jute is an all natural fiber derived from plants. This material can be used to create extremely strong bands that make excellent webbing. In fact, for many years jute was the only material used as webbing in furniture projects. It wasn’t until the 1950’s that we began to see the creation of other synthetic webbings.

Jute webbing usually requires coils beneath both for support and for comfort. If working with jute, be sure to stretch the webbing as tightly as possible around the frame of the furniture. As a natural material, jute does have a tendency to stretch over time.

Rubber webbing is the modern day version of jute webbing. Made from a synthetic material, it has replaced jute in many contemporary furniture constructions. Rubber makes an excellent webbing material because of it’s combination of strength, durability, and flexibility. It won’t tear or break easily and holds up extremely well under pressure. If you are working with rubber webbing, you may be able to exclude metal coils from your project.

To attach your rubber webbing to the frame of your furniture project, we are happy to provide a selection of webbing clips, especially made for this purpose.

Our order form may give you higher price but we will refund the difference and ship in flat rate boxes. (for example to Australia our shopping cart may give you $160 or more-we'll refund the difference).
